For Del…

I’ve written previously about making the decision to “legally” marry after the California State Supreme Court overturned the ban claiming that denying the right was unconstitutional.

One big reason I decided to give a flying leap about acquiring the government’s piece of paper was the story of Del Martin & Phyllis Lyon, two women who have been together for 55 years and have been instrumental in fighting for my right to marry my wife.

They inspired me so much I was really close to wearing a “For Del & Phyllis” shirt to my own ceremony.

They were the first couple to be married when Gavin offered them in San Francisco, and they were the first to marry again in the recent state same-sex marriages ruling (in fact, they were plaintiffs in bringing the whole case about).

I wake up this morning to find that Del Martin passed away yesterday.
I feel sorry for those against same-sex marriage, as they obviously don’t understand what love is about. If you really love somebody, you would love them even if they lost their dick, didn’t have a vagina. It’s not what sex they are, it’s just that they’re them.

Loving someone is the greatest feeling in the world and I hope everybody gets to experience it in their life.
Thank you to Del, who spent 63% of her lifetime fighting for my civil rights and for the 73 days she got to spend legally married to the women who she described as “the love of her life.”
