Tormented by a spider
2009 May 21
With the warm weather comes the appearance of random bugs in the apartment, trying to escape the brutal heat. It’s mostly spiders, sometimes earwigs. The other night we came home to find a humungous cricket chilling in the living room like he’d been watching our DVR while we were gone.
The routine goes a little something like this – I spot the bug, freeze, point, yell for my wife. The cat, who unlike most felines doesn’t feel like killing bugs is worth his effort, sits on and only watches. My wife comes in with a paper towel, or in more extreme cases, a flip-flop, to take the bug out.
Two mornings ago, right before my wife left for work, we spotted a Harry Potter-type spider on the ceiling… the size of which would easily call for flip-flop treatment. But when she returned with the shoe, that eight-legged mf’er scurried into a crack and escaped death.
Then yesterday morning, nearby where the spider had hidden, I found a thick band of web hanging from the ceiling. At the end was a dead lady bug, its wings and legs protruding out, like he (or she) had been trying to utilize all its strength all night but was unable to break free. It was actually very disturbing.
I think the spider was sending us a message… and I’m now somewhat afraid to be home by myself.
