My CS Open Round One Score

2010 May 19

mark-kauffman-actress-angela-lansbury-limbering-up-for-hit-broadway-show-mameWhile I was busy dreaming of sugarplums last night, the Creative Screenwriting Cyberspace Open posted the finalists for Round One.  One hundred writers out of a little over 1,400 will be participating in Round Two this weekend.

You can find the complete list of finalists for Round One, here.

I was fortunate enough to make it with a score of 96 on my short baseball scene.  If you’re interested in reading it, you can find it here.

My feedback and score specifics are below.  Yeah, you could say that I’m in a damn good mood this morning.  Congrats to all of the finalists.

Kimberly Nunley

Structure: 24

Dialogue: 23

Style: 25

Originality: 24

Total: 96

Comments:  Very fun, fresh, original scene.  Great job of taking a rather pedestrian moment and elevating it to great importance, as well as putting a clock on the stakes.  Loved this from the beginning to the end.  Nice work!

Congrats on making the finalists. I participated in the CS open for the first time ever and unfortunately fell a bit short with an 85/100 on my political/spy thriller scene. Here was the breakdown.

    Structure – 20

    Dialogue – 21

    Style – 23

    Originality – 21

    Total – 85

    Comments:
This is a well-written scene with a lot of action and a very nice ‘movie-like’ tone, but it feels a little off from the prompt. Fitzsimmons is clearly up to no good and Wilcox is there to stop him, but their dialogue feels a little backstory-heavy and ‘talky’ û we’re a little ‘in the dark’ as to what’s really happening. The ending is a pretty straightforward action sequence that reads well on the page. Overall, a nice effort but we crave a bit more clarity in something that, without it, feels a tad cliche. Good luck.

Not too disappointing for my first time out. Anyway, I’ll be launching my own screenwriting/professional blog soon and am looking to start connecting with potential creative blog links. Best of luck in round 2.

    Cheers,
    Howard Green

Ha! You beat me by a point! I pulled in a 95.

I also wrote a sports themed short. Mine was about a track race.

I loved your short. Great tension while he was in line. And the way you worked in the baby blue shirt the beer guy had on was classic. The ending was priceless.

    Great piece of work.

Best of luck in the next round!

Hey guys! Thanks so much for your comments!

@Howard – an 85 is a great first score. The first year I participated in this, I got a 77… woops. Please keep me posted once you put your site together.

@Ron – thanks for the wishes!

@Steven – Nice! Congrats on the great score and best of luck this weekend! Thank you for your nice words about my short.

I don’t feel so bad with an 89 knowing now that you got a 77 your first time out. Your scene was great I wish you luck in the next round.

I am doing part 2 on my own and posting it on my blog as preparation for next seasons contest.

Again congratulations on advancing and I hope you post your next scene on here as well.
