Doing it for the love

It’s easy to get too focused on writing a script that will sell.  Is your idea marketable?  Have the genre’s similar to your script done well financially?  We’re told to ask ourselves these questions prior to spending months on a script.

But maybe that’s why there are so many horrible movies made.  Creative decisions are traded out for financially-conscious ones.

While it would be stupid not to recognize and respect that it’s the business side of Hollywood that allows movies to be created and offered for viewing in the theaters in the first place, I don’t know if it should be at the heart of what drives you when you’re writing your script.

I caught this interview of Lauryn Hill this morning, where she discusses her disappearance and break from the music scene.  She wanted to make creating music a part of her life, not the driving force of her life.

Some quotes that stuck with me…

“I think I’m ready to express myself again… you have to live life so you have something substantial to share… or it’s kind of pointless and vain.”

“I don’t think I ever did music just for attention or to be seen… I did it because it also stimulated me and I was excited about the challenge, the challenges of making music.”

At the top of the music industry, while her fans were screaming for a new album, she stepped back to focus on her life and return to the love of just creating.

Mmm… I needed that. Thanks for sharing. Great words from a great woman. We are all refugees. And I’ve always seen a huge link between songwriting and screenwriting.
