A Writer’s Website

Goooood morning!

I’m sleep deprived and amped on coffee, but yesterday was an incredibly productive day.

Anyway, one of the four thousand and seventy-five things I want to do once I finish and submit this script is to rethink and revamp my website.  I need to really figure out what I want my site to be, because right now it’s a hodge-podge of randomness.

Luckily, Jane Friedman at Writer’s Digest wrote an incredible post on what a writer’s website should include and more importantly, what it should not.  Check it out, here.

Promoting Yourself with the Internet

I saw this video over at Go Into The Story and wanted to share it here.

It’s an edited recap of a panel presentation that was sponsored by the WGAw on how to effectively promote yourself using the internet.  I hope you’re able to take something from it.

Check, check, check it out.

I do some freelance work for a company called Demand Studios and they highlighted me on their blog today.

Check it out, while ignoring the picture in which I look twenty years my elder, here.

Would you say I’m selfish? *No… not to your face.*

I was about to post my weekly “Thankful Friday” post this morning when I happened to read this great article from kidlit.com beforehand.  It’s written by a woman named Mary, a literary agent from the Bay Area, and the article is about writers using online platforms to promote themselves and their work.

She made a thorough list of DO’s and DON’Ts, suggesting how writers should focus their online efforts.  She pretty much crapped on what I use my personal site for.  And I am somewhat in agreement with her.  Instead of me only talking about myself, my own projects, or how many times my cat bit me while typing that day, I need to provide some sort of beneficial content for YOU.

I don’t think you reading about my own struggles with Superhero fits in that category.

So, while I’ll continue to provide updates on my own personal writing endeavors, I’m going to put more effort into providing information that’ll help you as a writer.

And that starts TODAY!

First up, this great article by a literary agent on how writers can be more successful with their online platform promotional efforts.  You can read it, here.

Greenwriter Update…

Until this morning, I’d forgotten all about uploading My Brother Mick to greenwriter.org. If you don’t remember, greenwriter.org allows writers to post feature screenplays, complete with logline, synopsis, and treatment for free. Film makers can then search to find the appropriate script for them.

I was all bubbly to log on and see the exciting activity numbers going on with My Brother Mick.

It’s been up since November 2nd and so far…

1 synopsis viewing. No downloads.

Damn.

Excuse me while I go refill my bowl of baked Cheetos.

EDIT: Greenwriter.org is just starting up, so it’s unreasonable to think there are going to be huge numbers. And, of course, my logline and premise could not be strong enough. Yes, I’m bummed… but it’s that same type of disappointment when a lottery ticket fails to have the correct numbers on it.

“What are my chances?”
“Not good.”
“You mean, not good like one in a hundred?”
“I’d say more like one out of a million.”
(pause)
“So you’re telling me there’s a chance… YEAH!!!”

Thankful Friday… 10/30

Phew… long, tiring week, but overall a very positive one.

*continued rewriting My Brother Mick. Should be able to have it up on greenwriter.org by the end of next week.

*started making my way through Story by Robert McKee… think I’m going to acquire some great knowledge from this book.

*entered My Brother Mick‘s logline into a new free contest at Scriptshadow.

*the heater in our apartment is working much better than last year. We haven’t had to sleep in beanies yet.

*woke up this morning and checked the bank account… got a little chunk from my former (paying) job. Not much, but discovering any unexpected extra cash is a great way to start the day.

*Taco Tuesday with friends should be a weekly routine for everybody.

Have a positive and safe weekend!

Greenwriter is our friend…

This post is for my fellow screenwriters, who I wanted to make sure have heard of this new company…

After checking their booth out in the exhibit hall at the Screenwriting Expo, I did some research into Greenwriter.org. For writers, it’s a pretty sweet deal.

In an attempt to help make connections between writers and producers, Greenwriter.org allows writers to upload their completed feature scripts online for free. Producers get access to the scripts by signing up for an unlimited plan for $24.95/month or $1/each download, and in theory will be able to find the right story for them.

To seduce producers, each completed script can be accommodated with a logline, synopsis, and treatment. Plus, writers are able to suggest possible actors that they deem appropriate for the story, so that anybody looking for work for a specific talent can find your script.

Greenwriter.org is also trying to prevent the millions of paper wasted from writers sending out hard copies of their work when querying producers, hence the hippy company name… which of course I love, being that I’m from the Bay Area.

Check out the company here.
