+ I was blessed with 10 days with my little sister. I miss her already.
+ Got through some pages in Tim Hauser’s The Pixar Treasures. There are so many hidden gems in this book.
+ Paid bills and it looks like the lights will stay on at least another month.
+ Landed some freelance writing work.
+ Watched Easy Rider for the first time. Yikes. I’m just thankful that I can now say I’ve seen it.

Thankful *ACHOOO* Friday 11/11

“ACHOO,” because I can’t go for longer than five minutes without sneezing. Stupid cold virus caught up to me. Still, there’s a number of things to be thankful for this week:

+ My wife and I have been together for 11 years.
+ I’ve gotten to hang out with my little sister who’s staying with me for two weeks.
+ I have an unbelievably supportive friend who’s helped me watch my sister so I could take care of my responsibilities.
+ Was able to get out of the house and take a walk around Lake Merritt with my friend and sister.
+ Although not to the extent that I would like, progress was made on the script rewrite.
+ Tomorrow we’re hosting a small party to show Sly Sylvester.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Thankful Friday 10/28

This morning I’m spending an hour to lay out my game plan for the next two months so that I finish 2011 strong. There are a number of things I plan on accomplishing. Taking time to plan out my journey ensures that I’m efficiently applying my time to my goals everyday, and to be honest, doing so is going to make me feel better.

At a time when my “day job” has taken a bit of a blow and I’m perhaps questioning my self-worth and feeling a bit like a moocher (at times imagining myself as Jason Segal in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, laying on the couch and never getting out of my sweats), I need to charge my batteries, if you will.

Enough emo-talk. I’m here to discuss what I am thankful for this week, which includes:

+ Having the opportunity to attend the Austin Film Festival & Conference
+ Getting to come home from Austin and return to my wife, kitty cat and friends
+ Sharing coffee and coffee cake with local photographer and filmmaker, Thomas Broening. Check out his latest short, “Frankenstein’s Dog.”
+ Oakland’s Goapele released a really great album. Stream it here.
+ We ate at home all week. Yay to saving money and eating better.
+ After a five month hiatus, writer and cartoonist Allie Brosch returned with a brutally honest and hilarious post about the reason behind her disappearance. This woman is one of my favorite writers.
+ More than halfway through re-reading Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.”

Hope you all have a great weekend. I’ll see you Monday!

Thankful Friday 10/14

In legendary emcee Nas’ track, “N.Y. State of Mind,” he claims that he  doesn’t sleep because, and I quote, “sleep is the cousin of death.”

I’m sorry Nas. You’re an amazing emcee. One of the best! But, I am going to have to go against you on this one. If I don’t get a good night of sleep soon, I’m likely to severely injure myself doing something stupid. Plus, your sentiments are not really fair. I know I don’t want to be judged based on my extended family members. So therefore, sleeping this weekend is exactly what I intend to do.

What I am thankful for this week:

+ Sun! The weather has been an absolute rock star this week.
+ Got a haircut so I’ll hopefully look fresh in Austin next week.
+ My wife surprised me and brought home a log of amazing goat cheese.
+ Saw Los Rakas & Questlove perform live at the Life is Living street festival in Oakland.
+ This week’s workouts were on point!
+ Sly Sylvester is 90% done.

Have a great weekend!

Thankful Friday 10/7

Oh hey, long time no see! Good morning.

As you can imagine, things are a bit crazy as of late, but thanks to the power of caffeine and a little bit of sleep, I’m managing. There is a lot to be positive about this week.

+ This week my best friend and I decided to kick our workouts up a notch. It feels good to work hard and be sore.
+ We’re making great progress on Sly Sylvester. Keep up with us via the film’s blog or by clicking that Facebook ‘like’ button over there at the bottom of the right column. ->
+ My mom and sister visited my great aunt who is in the process of kicking lung cancer’s ass. They reported to me that she’s looking great.
+ Speaking of Sly Sylvester, I’m so excited to share that we reached our Kickstarter fundraising goal. So far, forty-three different people have financially chipped in to help us make the best short film we can. It’s humbling.
+ I read this great blog post from screenwriter Phill Barron on the secret of success. Be sure to check it out.
+ The plastic around my DVD copy of Bridesmaides was finally peeled off. I spent Sunday evening with my wife and best friend, eating dinner and cracking up.
+ I’ve been staying positive despite the significant decline in freelance writing opportunities. It’s been a little rough lately, but I’m trying to use the free time to work on personal projects.
+ The Austin Film Festival is just a week and a half away.
+ After a week of rain, the sun is shining today and is expected to stay for a bit!
+ I mailed out my feature script, Queen To Be, to a production company this week, and will be sending the synopsis out to another today.

Thankful Friday 9/23

CRAZY busy week. But, I survived. I’m alive and healthy and there’s a lot to be thankful for.

+ DADT was repealed! All of our service men and women should be respected.
+ The weather has been gorgeous in the Bay.
+ I got to shake hands with Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest.
+ I gave a hi-five to Zoe Dunning, bad-ass retired Navy Commander who made a significant impact on the DADT repeal.
+ Phonte let loose his new album, Charity Starts at Home, early for those who pre-ordered. AND he signed it (shown above). I love Phonte and his album, per usual,  is dope!
+ The Sly Sylvester shoot is here! Both days this weekend.
+ Speaking of Sly Sylvester, we reached the halfway mark of our Fundraising goal this week! Thanks to those who’ve contributed to our Kickstarter project.
+ Family and friends have stepped up and been so supportive with helping us put together this film.

Hope you all have a great weekend! I hope to survive the shoot and see you on Monday.

Thankful Friday 9/17/11

This week, I am thankful for…

+ My wife surprised me with a lovely bouquet of yellow tulips. Yes, she’s a keeper.
+ Booked my trip to Austin for the Austin Film Festival.
+ Went with my best friend to catch Ray LaMontagne & Brandi Carlile perform live… outside… while watching a gorgeous sunset.
+ Stayed alive despite not having made a trip to the grocery store in forever.
+ Had the motivation to pick up those neglected dumbbells three times this week.
+ We’ve reached the 1/3 funding mark in our Kickstarter Fundraising project for Sly Sylvester. People believing in you is exhilarating and slightly terrifying.
+ We’re getting closer to shooting day for Sly Sylvester. I’m heading to the store today to stock up on caffeine for the next week.

This weekend is filled with Sly Sylvester meetings and to-do’s. Plus, I have my last rec league basketball game, which I’m thankful for. My body’s physically ready for the break.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Thankful Friday 9/9

Yowzers! So much to be thankful for this week.

First, which needs to be noted apart from the other positives this week is that my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary. Well, because of our current work load, we actually didn’t get to “celebrate” just yet, but we’re taking Saturday night off and will be sharing the evening together. It’s a big day! The anniversary of the day I tricked my wife into marrying me… sucker.

Other awesome things that happened this week:

+ Received a personal phone call from a representative at the Austin Film Festival, congratulating me on making it to the second round.
+ Had a meeting with the first cast member announced for Sly Sylvester. I am so pumped that we’re making a movie!
+ Spent a fun-filled weekend camping with some friends on the Russian River.
+ Received a beautiful tee from Award Tour. The coloring of this piece makes me feel like I’m a kid again, riding my bike with my best friend Leann over to the local market to grab an It’s It.

Thankful Friday 9/2

This week I’m thankful for…

+ The opportunity to make my own short film. I’ve been up early and not hitting the sack until midnight every night because of Sly Sylvester, but despite the amount of work involved, it’s been a blast.
+ We had our friend Melissa over for dinner one night this week. She’s going to be helping us with production. It’s awesome to have such supportive people in my life.
+ Received notification from the Austin Film Festival that Queen To Be made it to the second round of their Screenwriting Competition. Despite it not making it as a semifinalist, I’m still ecstatic. There were about 5800 submissions and only 10% made it to the second round.
+ Received Miasco‘s new “I’m Not Lost” tee. The design is inspired by the quote, “Not all those who wander are lost,” which I believe is J.R.R. Tolkien.

Thankful Friday 8/19

Even Peja has my back.

It was more apparent than ever this week how lucky I am to have the support system that I have. I feel blessed that there is a small group that honestly care about me. These are not, “I’m your partner/friend/family member when it’s convenient,” types of relationships. There are a couple who relentlessly swing their pom-poms for me and I appreciate their loyalty.

+ I received some really big news, which I’ll share soon when the time is appropriate. The next few months will be busy and exciting.
+ Beautiful and talented Adele, live. One of the greatest experiences I’ll ever have.
+ I sat in on a webinar featuring screenwriting guru Robert McKee and picked up one or two great tips.
+ My gorgeous wife thought we needed a fun evening out and thus surprised me by getting home from work early and taking me to dinner. Check out this heavenly eggplant creation:

None of it went to waist.

Tonight I get to make dinner for some friends.

And then…

My wife and I are taking the next nine days off. Nine days! I hope you all have a great weekend.
