Friday has come around once again. This week has been a positive one, in terms of both professional and personal development.

I’ve gotten BREAKFAST AT GERARDO’S in a position where I’m really happy with it. I’ll be meeting with a writing group this weekend and will listen to their thoughts before I start diving in on storyboarding next week. I’ve started to do some research on effective storyboarding. Because we were on such a tight deadline with SLY SYLVESTER, we never had the opportunity to sketch out all of the shots to the extent we had hoped. This time around, we have the opportunity to really take our time and get things right. I recently posted a couple YouTube gems I found this week that discuss storyboarding. You can find them on my Tumblr site.

I knocked out some freelance projects over the last few days. My schedule has now opened up, so if you’re looking for a copywriter or health and fitness content, please contact me.

Progress was made outside of the home office this week as well. I was able to get some quality workouts in with my best friend, which may sound a bit lame, but that time spent kicking my butt and getting to hang out with her is necessary for my sanity. Plus, I got on the skateboard three times this week and will hopefully get a little session in tonight and tomorrow. I’m improving. At this point, I only feel like a little bit of an idiot when I’m riding. As a cherry on top, I was lucky enough to be chosen by Levi Maestro as a winner of one of his new STRO skateboard decks (which you can take a gander at above). It’s such a sweet gift and I can’t wait to hook it up and start riding on it. Thank you Levi for the generous gift!

I grew up a little bit more this week too, despite that at 32 I’m technically an adult. Last night my wife and I had dinner with some friends and a discussion came up that required us all to share what we would do in a certain difficult situation. One response absolutely blew me out of the water. She suggested to do nothing, because it wouldn’t bring anything positive out of the situation. It was something I would have never thought of and made me realize that I have been overly stupid about something. I really need to let negativity and animosity go.

Before I let you go, I have to pass along this Oddisee EP that was released this week. The producer/emcee remixed and added rhymes to originals by Bon Iver, K-Os, Marvin Gaye and Metronomy. I highly recommend it. Odd Renditions is free to download.

Have a great weekend. I’ll see you all next week!

- Kim

Decided last second to submit my short script, BREAKFAST AT GERARDO’S, to go Blue Cat’s Short Screenplay Contest. If you remember, this is the script I will be producing this year. Step numero uno for me is to get the story as strong as I can, so I’ve been working hard on rewriting this guy.

I’ve been blessed to receive some strong feedback by fellow writers and I feel really good about this submission. Hopefully Blue Cat feels the same.

Riding a skateboard is something I’ve always wanted to do. Unfortunately, I’m abnormally fearful about a lot of things, including flying, heights, touching my eyeballs to put contacts in, and yes, standing atop a plank of wood on wheels. Toss in a bad experience involving a board sliding out underneath me and eating asphalt when I was younger, and you’ve got yourself an absolute wuss that until yesterday didn’t have the juevos to try again.

My sister-in-law, who unfortunately is currently out of commission due to an uncoordinated female who had no business ever stepping on a basketball court taking out her knee, let me borrow her boards while she’s laid up. Yesterday, with her long board in hand, I headed out to the blacktop of the elementary school down the street from my spot. I was determined to just successfully get both of my feet on top of the board.

There were a number of teenagers at the school. Most were shooting hoops. One had headphones over his head and was bumping his ears to the music. They all stopped what they were doing for a moment as I strode by them, carrying the board and decked out in my compilation of injury-prevention equipment, including a bike helmet, knee pads and wrist guards. Don’t judge me. I’m at the age where safety > looking cool.

I practiced getting up onto the board and stepping off again. Repetition after repetition to get comfortable. By the end of the session, I rode across the entire school playground.

It was so much fun. I’m hooked.

It seems like a good number of people are criticizing President Obama for not being as aggressive as they were hoping when he spoke with Robin Roberts this morning and stated that he personally believes that gay couples should be able to get married. They’re complaining that it doesn’t change anything, it’s still a decision left up to the states, and blah, blah, blah…

Hello?!

THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HAD THE COURAGE TO PUBLICLY STATE THAT HE SUPPORTS GAY MARRIAGE.

Can we really think how huge this is for a second? The leader of our nation, on the day after North Carolina took a crap in the pot and voted on an amendment boycotting any type of unions between same-sex couples, said he’s rooting for us.

And yes, let’s throw it out there. Of course, he timed it to coincide with the upcoming election. President Obama is not an idiot. His team is not filled with idiots. But, if that’s the case, it means that he believes that him supporting gay marriage is going to help him get re-elected, which furthermore means that people are starting to open their minds.

Hi-five and thank you to my President, Mr. Barack Obama.

This morning I sat down with a printed copy of the latest rewrite and the notes that I’ve received from a couple of other friends who are writers. It feels good to start the day with screenwriting work.

I’ve been too busy writing and screwing around, so I missed my typical “Thankful Friday” post. Therefore, I present, “Thankful Monday.”

It’s been a work-filled and yet AWESOME week and a half.

+ Went to watch the Giants beat the Brewers with my wife, mom and sister. It was Romo bobblehead day! He’s my favorite player. I’m not one for nick-nacks, but this is going on my desk.
+ Watched The Avengers. Went into it expecting the worst, but it’s really good. They actually spent time developing the script!
+ Rushed over to catch the tail end of Benny Gold‘s Valencia Collection release party. I got to take a picture with him and restock up on socks.
+ Played hooky one day and spent an afternoon in Napa with my wife. We ate at Taylor’s (sorry Gott family – it’ll always by Taylor’s) and sipped on our all-time favorite wine, Lang & Reed‘s Cabernet Franc.
+ BBQ’d with my wife and best friend. It may have been raining, but we didn’t care.
+ Freelance work load has been so ridiculously heavy, but I welcome it with open arms.

Until next time,
Kim

My neighbors up the road are replacing their roof and their incessant...

My neighbors up the road are replacing their roof and their incessant hammering makes it sound like its World War III outside. Luckily I’m taking today off to hang out with my wife and hopefully fit in a little bit of wine tasting. April was a ridiculously busy month and went by as a blur.

Over the past week and a half, I’ve been doing some coverage for the San Francisco Film Society, attending an array of events at the San Francisco International Film Festival. I was able to take in a number of great films (Be sure to check out THE INTOUCHABLES when it’s widely released) and even attend a conversation with screenwriter David Webb Peoples (UNFORGIVEN, BLADE RUNNER).
We screened SLY SYLVESTER at the Sacramento International Film Festival last week. It was by far the biggest crowd that has seen the project, and though I was rocking nervously in the back, the overall reception was super positive. A number of friends and family came out as well, which was really touching.
Last night I made my submission to this year’s Nicholl Fellowship. I ended up deciding just to submit one of my features, instead of two, because I feel like the second still needs some work and I don’t want to submit anything that’s not ready.
Plus, my freelance work has completely exploded as of late. I have my plate full of projects.

Tomorrow, freelance responsibilities and diving in head-first on my next script. Today, however, relaxation.

Yesterday was World Book Night, an event designed to promote reading and literacy. In one day, 25,000 participants handed out a total of 500,000 free books. This year I had the honor of being one of the participants. There was a list of 30 books to choose from, but I knew immediately that I wanted to share Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.” It’s my favorite book of all-time; one that I’ve read numerous times.

My wife and best friend (and her Australian Shephard, Cassidy) headed out to Lake Merritt in Oakland yesterday afternoon to hand out our 20 books. Once people were convinced we weren’t selling anything, the books went fast. I recommend signing up to get notified for next year’s World Book Night. It’s a super cool event.

Thanks to my wife, friend and Cassidy for taking off the afternoon to help me out, to Laurel Book Store for being a part of the event, and for all of the sponsors that generously donated their services to promote reading.

It may be 4/20, but the only thing I’ll be celebrating today is that it’s Friday and the most beautiful day of the year so far. This week has been a great one. There’s change in the air folks! Big things are happening!

This week was a damn good one.

+ I attended both Opening Day and Opening Night San Francisco Giants games. We won both!
+ I got to see Gotye (Got-yay? Go-tee-yay? Gor-te-ya?) perform live with a group of special people.
+ I met with the Editor of our local neighborhood newspaper, the MacArthur Metro, and I’ll be contributing to the publication. I’ve gotten my first assignment!
+ Progress was made on the script rewrites. Ten days until these bad boys are submitted to Nicholl.
+ I watched Andrew Haigh’s film, Weekend. A little slow, but I was impressed by the performances.
+ Next Monday, April 23, I get to participate in World Book Night. I’ll be at Lake Merritt in the afternoon handing out copies of my all-time favorite book, Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.” I picked up my stash this week! Come hang out and have some lemonade with us on Sunday.
+ I’m going to be doing some coverage for the San Francisco International Film Festival. Watch movies and then write about them? Sweet gig.
+ I’m still alive despite working WAY too many hours and sleeping WAY too few. I just need to push through the end of the month and then I may sleep for a week.

Hope that you all have a great weekend!
